To find a legitimate tax consultant in Malaysia, check that the person is a tax agent approved by the Minister of Finance under section 153 of the Income Tax Act 1967. Search their name on the Ministry of Finance MyCukai tax agent register, confirm the approval is still valid, and get their approval number in writing before you hire them.

Many salaried people do not need a consultant at all. This guide covers when one is worth paying for, how to verify them, and what to agree before they start.

Do I need a tax consultant?

Usually not if you only have salary income and file Form BE. You are more likely to need one if you have business income, run a company, or are dealing with an audit.

Your situationDo you need a professional?
Salary only, standard reliefs, Form BEUsually no. e-Filing pre-fills your employment income and calculates the tax.
Salary plus rental or investment incomeOptional. Worth it if you are unsure what is taxable.
Freelance or sole proprietor income, Form BOften useful, especially for business expenses and capital allowances.
Sdn Bhd company, Form C and CP204 estimatesYes, in practice. Companies need accounts prepared and, unless exempt, audited.
LHDN audit, investigation or a disputed assessmentYes, if the amounts are significant or records are incomplete.
Moving to or from Malaysia, or foreign incomeConsider one. Residence status changes how you are taxed.

What is the difference between a tax agent, an accountant and a tax adviser?

Only an approved tax agent can act for you before LHDN. Under subsection 153(1) of the Income Tax Act 1967, representation is limited to tax agents approved under subsection 153(3), and approval comes from the Minister of Finance (HASiL: tax agents).

  • Approved tax agent: can prepare and submit your return through LHDN's Tax Agent e-Filing system (TAeF) and deal with LHDN for you, including during an audit.
  • Accountant: prepares financial statements and bookkeeping. Many accountants are also approved tax agents, but not all.
  • "Tax consultant" or "tax adviser": a general label. Someone without tax agent approval can give advice but cannot represent you before LHDN.

How do I verify a tax agent?

Check the Ministry of Finance register, then check the details match what the agent gave you.

  1. Ask for their full name, firm and approval number. HASiL requires approved agents to state their name, approval number and approval period in their correspondence with HASiL, so a legitimate agent will have these to hand.
  2. Search the MyCukai register. Search by name and state, and confirm the approval has not expired. HASiL's appointment page links to this register and says checking it is the taxpayer's responsibility.
  3. Check professional membership if they claim it. The Malaysian Institute of Accountants has a member and firm search. The Chartered Tax Institute of Malaysia is the professional body for tax practitioners.
  4. Formalise the appointment. To appoint an agent with LHDN, you send a letter with the agent's full name, identification number, firm name, approval number and contact details, plus a consent letter from the agent, to the HASiL office handling your file.

What should I ask before hiring?

Ask about scope, fees and who does the work. Get the answers in an engagement letter.

  • What exactly does the fee cover: filing only, or also LHDN queries, amendments and audit support?
  • Who will prepare my return, and who reviews it?
  • What documents do you need from me, and by when?
  • Have you handled cases like mine (freelance income, rental, a company, foreign income)?
  • Will I see the full return before it is submitted?
  • How do you charge for work outside the agreed scope?

How much does a tax agent cost in Malaysia?

There is no official fee scale, and fees depend on the form, how organised your records are, and how much work the case needs. Ask for a written quote. The CukaiMax tax professional directory lists public prices published by Malaysian firms, each with the date it was seen, which helps you compare quotes.

What are the red flags?

  • No approval number, or a name not on the MyCukai register. They cannot represent you before LHDN.
  • A promised refund amount before they have seen your documents.
  • Asking for your MyTax password. Approved agents file through their own TAeF access.
  • Claims of special contacts at LHDN.
  • No written engagement letter or fee quote.
  • Advice to claim reliefs you have no receipts for. If LHDN disallows them, you owe the tax and any penalty.

Which deadlines should I give my tax agent?

Brief your agent early, because e-Filing opens on 1 March and the work queues up from there.

Working well with your agent

  • Send organised documents: Form EA from each employer, relief receipts grouped by category, bank statements for business or rental income, last year's return, and any LHDN letters.
  • Review the return before it goes in. It is your return, and you are liable for what is on it.
  • Keep copies. LHDN asks taxpayers to keep records and supporting documents for seven years (HASiL FAQ).

If your case is simple, filing yourself on MyTax costs nothing. Either way, CukaiMax can keep your relief receipts sorted through the year. The Free plan includes unlimited uploads, and the Personal plan (RM99/year) adds ZIP and CSV exports you can hand to an agent.
