Malaysian small businesses can prepare their taxes themselves, pair a bookkeeper with an approved tax agent, or hire a full-service accounting firm. Sole proprietors file Form B (YA 2025 was due 30 June 2026, or 15 July 2026 on e-Filing). A Sdn Bhd files Form C within seven months of its financial year-end and submits CP204 tax estimates.
The right option depends on your business structure, transaction volume and whether your company needs audited accounts. Start with what you must file, then match it to the level of help you need.
What does a small business have to file?
It depends on the structure. Sole proprietors are taxed as individuals on Form B. Companies file Form C and pay monthly instalments based on a CP204 estimate.
| Obligation | Who it applies to | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Form B | Sole proprietors and freelancers (resident individuals with business income) | 30 June, plus 15 days on e-Filing |
| Form P | Partnerships (each partner also files Form B) | 30 June, plus 15 days on e-Filing |
| Form C | Companies (Sdn Bhd) | Within 7 months of the financial year-end, plus 1 month on e-Filing |
| CP204 tax estimate | Companies | 30 days before the basis period starts. New companies: within 3 months of starting operations |
| CP204 instalments | Companies | Monthly, by the 15th |
| Form E and C.P.8D | All employers | 31 March |
| Form EA to staff | All employers | By the end of February |
| SST-02 return | SST-registered businesses | Every two months, by the last day of the following month, even if no tax is due |

For YA 2025, Form B was due 30 June 2026 (15 July on e-Filing). For YA 2026, LHDN has not yet published the 2027 programme. If it follows the 2026 pattern, Form B is due 30 June 2027 (15 July on e-Filing). See our Form B guide and deadline page.
Do I need to issue e-Invoices?
Only if your annual turnover or revenue is RM3 million or more. LHDN's e-Invoice Guideline (version 4.8, published 30 August 2026) exempts taxpayers below RM3,000,000. The exemption does not apply if you have a non-individual shareholder, holding company, related company or joint venture with turnover of RM3 million or more (LHDN e-Invoice timeline).
| Phase | Annual turnover or revenue | Mandatory from |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | More than RM100 million | 1 August 2024 |
| 2 | More than RM25 million, up to RM100 million | 1 January 2025 |
| 3 | More than RM5 million, up to RM25 million | 1 July 2025 |
| 4 | Up to RM5 million (RM3 million and above, given the exemption) | 1 January 2026 |
The phase is set by your 2022 turnover. Businesses that started in 2023 to 2025 with turnover of at least RM3 million start on 1 July 2026.
What tax rates apply to a small business?
Sole proprietors pay resident individual rates on their business profit, together with any other income. Use the income tax calculator to estimate it. Companies pay corporate rates.
| Chargeable income | SME company rate (current) | Budget 2027 proposal (from YA 2027) |
|---|---|---|
| First RM150,000 | 15% | 14% |
| RM150,001 to RM600,000 | 17% | 16% |
| Above RM600,000 | 24% | 24% |
A company counts as an SME here if its paid-up capital is RM2.5 million or less and its annual sales are RM50 million or less. Other companies pay 24% on all chargeable income.
The Budget 2027 changes are proposals tabled on 9 October 2026. They apply from YA 2027 only if passed in the Finance Bill. Budget 2027 also proposes raising the capital allowance limit for each small-value asset from RM2,000 to RM3,000 from YA 2027. SMEs remain able to claim these assets in full with no annual cap (MOF Budget 2027 tax measures). See our Budget 2027 tax summary for the full list.
Does my Sdn Bhd need audited accounts?
Yes, unless it qualifies for audit exemption under SSM Practice Directive 10/2024. A private company qualifies if it meets at least two of three limits for the current year and each of the two previous years. The limits rise in three phases:
| Financial periods starting in | Revenue up to | Total assets up to | Employees up to |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 | RM1 million | RM1 million | 10 |
| 2026 | RM2 million | RM2 million | 20 |
| 2027 onwards | RM3 million | RM3 million | 30 |
Public companies, their subsidiaries and foreign companies cannot use this exemption. Shareholders holding at least 5% can still require an audit (SSM Practice Directive 10/2024).
Which tax preparation option fits my business?
Match the option to how much of the work you can do well yourself. Whichever you choose, the person who submits your return to LHDN on your behalf must be an approved tax agent.
| Option | You do | They do | Fits when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DIY with accounting software | Bookkeeping and filing | Nothing | Sole proprietor, few transactions, no staff, no SST | Missed deductions and capital allowances. You carry every error |
| Bookkeeper plus tax agent | Supply documents and review | Bookkeeper keeps the books; agent prepares and files the return | Growing sole proprietor or small Sdn Bhd with regular transactions | Two parties to coordinate. Agree who owns year-end adjustments |
| Tax agent for filing only | Keep your own books | Prepare and submit Form B or C, handle LHDN queries | You keep clean books but want the return done properly | The agent works only with the records you give them |
| Full-service accounting firm | Approve and sign | Books, accounts, audit coordination, tax, CP204, payroll, SST | Sdn Bhd that needs audited accounts, has staff, or is SST-registered | Highest ongoing cost. Check what the retainer covers |
There is no official fee scale for these services, and quotes vary with transaction volume and scope. The CukaiMax tax professional directory lists public prices from Malaysian firms with the date each was seen. Use it to compare, then get a written quote.
How do I choose a provider?
- Verify the tax agent on the Ministry of Finance MyCukai register and confirm the approval is current. See how to find and verify a tax agent.
- Ask what the fee covers: CP204 estimates and revisions, Form E, SST returns, e-Invoice set-up, LHDN queries and audit support are often charged separately.
- Ask how they handle e-Invoice if you are at or near RM3 million turnover.
- Get an engagement letter that sets out scope, deadlines and fees.
- Be wary of anyone who promises a tax figure before seeing your records.
What penalties should a small business avoid?
| Offence | Penalty |
|---|---|
| Not filing a return (s.112(1)) | Fine of RM200 to RM20,000, up to 6 months' imprisonment, or both |
| Late payment of individual tax (s.103) | 10% increase, plus a further 5% if still unpaid after 60 days |
| CP204 instalment paid more than 30 days late (s.107B(3)) | 10% of the outstanding instalment |
| Actual tax more than 30% above the revised estimate (s.107B(4)) | 10% of the difference |
| Incorrect return (s.113(1)) | Fine of RM1,000 to RM10,000 plus 200% of tax undercharged |

Keep business records for seven years. LHDN can audit up to three years of assessment as standard, and up to five where there is fraud, wilful default or negligence.
A simple compliance calendar
- Monthly: record income and expenses, reconcile bank accounts, remit PCB for staff, pay CP204 instalments by the 15th (companies).
- Every two months: submit SST-02 if you are SST-registered.
- By end of February: give staff their Form EA.
- By 31 March: submit Form E and C.P.8D.
- By 30 June (15 July on e-Filing): Form B for sole proprietors, Form P for partnerships.
- Within 7 months of year-end: Form C for companies, with audited accounts unless exempt.
CukaiMax is built for personal income tax: it tracks relief caps and stores relief receipts. It is not accounting software and does not prepare Form B or Form C. If you are a sole proprietor, CukaiMax can keep the personal relief side of your Form B organised while your bookkeeping lives elsewhere.
